Strait of Hormuz maritime crisis leaves 19 sailors dead

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has reported that 19 sailors have died due to attacks on commercial vessels in the Middle East since late February. The crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has resulted in 68 confirmed incidents involving commercial ships, significantly impacting one of the world’s most critical maritime energy corridors.

Recent fatal attacks include the bulk carrier Riyan Star, which suffered an attack in the Strait of Hormuz resulting in the death of a crew member, and the Minoan Dignity, which lost a crew member following an attack on August 17. Other vessels mentioned in the IMO records include the Al Watan, Vela Nova, Minoan Pioneer, and GasLog Shanghai.

The instability has led to increased insurance premiums, rising freight rates, and a dramatic decrease in vessel transits. Many ships are now attempting to navigate the area with limited or no Automatic Identification System (AIS) functionality. Currently, more than 20,000 sailors remain in the broader region, many of whom are working in high-risk zones where conditions can change instantly.
