Strait of Magellan tunnel feasibility study launched
A feasibility study is being launched to evaluate the construction of a subaqueous tunnel under the Strait of Magellan to establish a permanent connection between the mainland and Tierra del Fuego. The Magallanes Regional Government and the Universidad Católica School of Engineering have signed a collaboration agreement to conduct this initial conceptual analysis, with results expected within six to eight months.
The proposed tunnel would span approximately three kilometers beneath the strait, with an additional kilometer at each end. One proposed location is the Primera Angostura sector, where the distance between the mainland and the island is roughly 4.5 kilometers, making it a technically optimal site.
Proponents suggest the tunnel would provide a more reliable alternative to bridges or current ferry and barge services, which are subject to the region's strong winds and geographic challenges. The project aims to improve logistics, tourism, and the supply of goods to southern Patagonia, though experts note the study must address environmental, geotechnical, community, and geopolitical factors.
