Strait of Messina Bridge project proceeds despite technical prescriptions
The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) has clarified that the Strait of Messina Bridge project is proceeding despite the Superior Council of Public Works issuing 361 prescriptions and 77 guidelines. The MIT maintains that these requirements are standard for large-scale national infrastructure projects and do not call the project's feasibility into question. The ministry compared the ratio of prescriptions to the 13.5 billion euro budget with other major works, such as the Salerno-Reggio Calabria railway, to argue that the current scrutiny is consistent with the project's scale.
Technical requirements from the Council include deeper investigations into seismic and geological risks, specifically regarding active faults and subsoil modeling. The Council also requested advanced aeroelastic analysis for wind resistance and stricter verification of high-strength steel quality.
Political opposition remains, with Agostino Santillo of the Five Star Movement labeling the project unfeasible and criticizing the government for pursuing a plan he claims is structurally and seismically flawed.
