Strasbourg Christmas market arch sparks cost controversy

The city of Strasbourg plans to replace the entrance arch of its famous Christmas market with a new, Instagram‑friendly structure. The project is budgeted at €140,000. Deputy mayor Mathieu Cahn said the existing arch is aging and needs renewal, and a tender was issued in the spring to redesign the arch for the Budengassen area.

Opposition politicians, including Green deputy Alain Jund and councilor Florence Varieras, criticised the expense, calling it “absurd” and urging the administration to focus on better crowd management and environmental measures for the market, which attracts about 3.5 million visitors each year. Local residents have also voiced concerns over the cost.
