Strasbourg prepares for Christmas markets amid security concerns

Strasbourg is preparing for its traditional Christmas markets, which are scheduled to run from November 27 to December 24, 2026. As Europe’s oldest Christmas market, the festivities feature approximately 300 chalets spread across 11 different sites throughout the city, including Place Kléber, Place Broglie, and the area surrounding the Cathedral.

However, municipal authorities are expressing concern regarding potential security threats to the city's iconic 30-meter-tall Christmas tree located at Place Kléber. Following violent demonstrations and looting on October 17, where certain religious and commercial sites were targeted, officials are taking precautions to protect the landmark. Mathieu Cahn, the first deputy mayor of Strasbourg, stated that the city will remain attentive to the tree's protection, noting that the symbol is intended to represent joy and happiness.
