Strasbourg students clash with police during demonstration

Violent clashes broke out in Strasbourg, France, during a student demonstration that initially began as a peaceful march. Thousands of participants, including European Parliament members Emma Fourreau and Anthony Smith from the La France Insoumise party, took part in the early stages of the procession.

The situation escalated when several hundred students reached the university citadel area and attempted to deviate from the agreed route toward the city center. To block their advance, French National Police riot units deployed tear gas. In response, students erected makeshift barricades using construction materials and trash bins, and threw stones and other objects at officers.

Police eventually cleared the roadway and pushed the protesters into the university campus gardens, restoring order without direct physical contact involving shields or batons.
