Strategies and research for healthy aging and longevity

Recent research and health guidelines emphasize the distinction between extending lifespan and improving healthspan—the period of life spent in good health. A 2025 study published in Nature Aging indicated that older adults using omega-3 supplements showed small signs of slower biological aging according to certain epigenetic DNA markers. The study noted that combining omega-3, vitamin D, and exercise may have additional effects, though researchers cautioned that these laboratory measures do not definitively prove an extension of human lifespan.

Beyond emerging scientific studies, established health organizations like the National Institutes of Health continue to prioritize foundational habits. Key recommendations for healthy aging include regular physical activity, nutritious eating, adequate sleep, and limiting alcohol consumption.

To combat age-related muscle loss, experts suggest a combination of aerobic activity, strength training at least twice a week, and balance exercises. Dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet—rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fish—are also linked to better long-term health outcomes. Maintaining protein intake is specifically highlighted as a method to help preserve muscle mass as people age.
