Strategies for developing emotional intelligence in children

Developing self-awareness and emotional intelligence in children is a key component of social-emotional learning (SEL). These skills help children recognize their emotions, understand their strengths, and comprehend how their thoughts and actions impact others, providing a foundation for personal and social growth.

Effective strategies for fostering these traits include teaching children to name specific emotions—such as frustration, jealousy, or disappointment—to help them connect feelings to specific situations. It is also noted that while feelings themselves are not bad behavior, the actions resulting from those feelings must be managed. For example, a child may be allowed to feel angry but is not permitted to hit.

Practical activities and daily interactions, such as navigating sibling conflicts or school stress, serve as opportunities for children to learn problem-solving, responsibility, and how to respond to challenging situations thoughtfully.
