Psychologists identify key phrase to resolve conflicts

Psychologists and researchers suggest that while conflict is a natural part of relationships and can prevent groupthink, it must be managed to remain productive. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant notes that disagreement is essential for innovation, but it becomes destructive when it shifts from an exchange of ideas to personal attacks.

Researchers at the University of Minnesota identified a specific phrase to steer heated arguments back to constructive territory: ‘I’d actually like to focus on all the things we agree on.’ This approach shifts the focus from differences to common ground, transforming an opponent into a partner in problem-solving. Other effective techniques include using ‘I’ statements to express feelings without making others feel attacked.

In professional settings, leaders are encouraged to ‘create the space’ for quality conversations, which involves addressing avoided topics rather than tiptoeing around tension. Additionally, emotional intelligence plays a key role in conflict management; emotionally intelligent individuals often avoid unnecessary drama by practicing self-control, empathy, and determining whether a specific provocation is worth their energy.
