Strategies for improving indoor air quality at home
Improving indoor air quality requires a layered approach involving three primary strategies: source control, ventilation, and filtration. While air purifiers can assist with filtration, they are not a complete solution on their own.
Source control is considered the most effective method, which involves identifying and removing pollutants at their origin. Common indoor contaminants include cooking fumes, tobacco smoke, cleaning products, dust, pet dander, fragrances, and mold caused by excess moisture. Some hazards, such as radon, may require specific testing as they are not visually apparent.
Ventilation helps by diluting indoor pollutants with outdoor air, while filtration removes particles from the existing indoor air. Managing humidity is also a critical component, as moisture levels affect both comfort and the growth of biological contaminants like mold.
