Strategies for skills-based hiring and interview mastery

Modern hiring practices often prioritize an individual's ability to perform during the interview process over their actual job skills. Experts suggest that organizations should focus on defining what success looks like for a role and providing meaningful ways for candidates to demonstrate competence rather than relying on traditional credentials.

David Flink, founder of The Neurodiversity Alliance, notes that workplace systems often reflect the habits of their creators, which can exclude diverse talent. While some employers have attempted to remove degree requirements to broaden their talent pool, a 2024 study by Harvard Business School and the Burning Glass Institute found that such changes only increased the share of workers without degrees by 3.5 percentage points.

To improve interview outcomes, candidates are encouraged to conduct thorough company research, practice common questions, maintain professional attire and punctuality, and utilize positive body language to convey confidence and enthusiasm.
