Stratford-upon-Avon hosts traditional Mop Fair
The Stratford Mop Fair recently took place in Stratford-upon-Avon, continuing a tradition that dates back to the 14th century. Historically, these fairs served as hiring events where agricultural and domestic workers met potential employers to negotiate terms of employment for the coming year.
In recent years, the event has shifted its focus toward community entertainment. The recent festivities featured fairground rides, games, food, and drink. Stratford Mayor Cllr Sam McNaught Barrow participated in the opening ceremonies, noting the presence of the Wilson family, one of Britain’s oldest established fairground families.
The upcoming Runaway Mop is scheduled for October 23rd–24th. Historically, this secondary event allowed workers to reconsider arrangements made during the main mop before committing to a full year of labor.
