Strathmere to implement beach tags, ending free access in 2027

The Upper Township Committee has unanimously approved a new ordinance requiring beach tags for access to Strathmere beaches, ending a tradition of free access that has lasted for over 100 years. The new policy is set to take effect in the summer of 2027.

Seasonal tags will cost $45, with a discounted rate of $30 available if purchased between October 4 and Presidents Day. Daily tags are priced at $10, while weekly tags will cost $20. The program is expected to generate between $200,000 and $300,000 annually. By law, all revenue must be used exclusively for beach maintenance, operations, and replenishment.

Officials cited rising costs as the primary driver for the change. Township Administrator James Van Zlike noted that the township spent over $513,000 in 2026 on beach-related services, including lifeguard wages and pensions. Additionally, the township recently borrowed $2.1 million in municipal bonds to fund its portion of a beach replenishment project.
