German family businesses face insolvency amid rising costs
Traditional German family businesses are facing significant economic pressure due to rising energy and raw material costs, as well as changing consumer behavior.
Bäckerei Maier GmbH, a fifth-generation bakery in Lupburg, Bavaria, has filed for insolvency. The Nuremberg District Court has ordered preliminary insolvency proceedings. While the company's six branches remain open and approximately 50 employees have their wages secured for three months via insolvency money, an investor search is underway to ensure long-term survival.
In Karlsruhe, Rudolf Neff GmbH was recently saved from insolvency through an acquisition by Simon Reich, though the restructuring required the closure of eight locations.
In the packaging sector, Straub-Verpackungen GmbH is reporting its worst financial figures in 30 years. CEO Steffen Würth noted that while the corrugated cardboard industry remains vital for logistics, the sector is currently struggling.
Data from the German Bakeries Association indicates a broader trend, with 63 bakeries declaring bankruptcy in the first half of 2026 alone, driven by competition from supermarket bakeries and high operational expenses.
