Straubing‑Bogen traffic accidents fall as Austria reports rise in distracted‑driver crashes

In the Bavarian district of Straubing‑Bogen, traffic accidents in 2022 declined by about seven percent compared with the pre‑COVID year 2019, dropping to 3,201 incidents with 346 injured persons and seven fatalities. The district officials highlighted that non‑adjusted speed remains the leading cause of severe injuries, while young adults (18‑24) accounted for a disproportionate share of alcohol‑ and drug‑related crashes. Wildlife collisions also remained high, with 1,739 incidents, mainly involving deer.

Meanwhile, Austria’s road authority ASFINAG reported that in the previous year 669 of 2,173 injury‑causing accidents were linked to driver distraction from mobile phones, navigation devices and other in‑vehicle activities, a figure that exceeds the prior year. Distracted driving was responsible for a substantial share of severe crashes, especially on motorways and near construction zones, where 40 % of accidents involved inattention. Officials emphasized the need for awareness campaigns and the testing of AI‑based collision‑warning systems to curb this trend.
