Strawberries, Raspberries and Blueberries Lead 2026 Pesticide Residue List
The Environmental Working Group's annual “Dirty Dozen 2026” report ranks strawberries, raspberries and blueberries among the fruits with the highest pesticide residues in the United States. USDA testing found an average of four pesticide compounds on strawberry samples, with some showing up to fourteen different substances. Health experts warn that chronic exposure, especially during pregnancy and childhood, may increase risks of birth defects, developmental issues, certain cancers, hormone disruption and other health problems.
Washing fruit with plain water removes roughly 30% of surface residues, while soaking in a solution of baking‑soda (one teaspoon per two cups of water) can eliminate about half. However, systemic pesticides absorbed by the plant cannot be removed by washing. Experts therefore recommend buying organic versions of the “Dirty Dozen” items whenever possible, or using the baking‑soda soak as a mitigation step for those who cannot afford organic produce.
