Streaming industry faces audience decline due to long production hiatuses
Long intervals between seasons are becoming a characteristic of the streaming industry, potentially harming audience engagement. Research by Luminate indicates that series experiencing hiatuses longer than 18 months can see audience declines of up to 60%.
Several high-profile productions have faced significant delays, including Euphoria, which took nearly four years to return, and Stranger Things, which had a three-and-a-half-year gap between seasons. Other examples include Wednesday and Apple TV’s Severance.
Multiple factors contribute to these delays. The pursuit of cinematic quality has increased the time required for filming and post-production, particularly for visual effects. Additionally, streaming platforms often wait for audience reactions to full season releases before committing to renewals or script development. Scheduling conflicts also play a role, as actors frequently commit to other projects during long production gaps.
