Streaming platforms introduce nostalgic browsing and scheduled movie events
New digital platforms are attempting to replicate the nostalgic experience of traditional video rental stores to combat the fatigue of modern streaming algorithms.
UK software engineers Patrick and Oliver Evans have launched BingeBrowse, a website designed to mimic the sensation of browsing physical shelves. The interface allows users to navigate through various streaming services, including Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video, using categories like genre and new releases. The platform aims to provide an alternative to the endless scrolling and algorithmic recommendations typical of current streaming interfaces.
Simultaneously, Pluto TV is introducing ‘Double Feature Fridays’ to create a more structured viewing experience. The service will pair studio classics with new indie premieres based on shared themes or stars. The program will include segments from Entertainment Tonight to provide behind-the-scenes context, aiming to turn streaming into a scheduled weekly event rather than a continuous, unstructured choice.
