Streaming services reshape live content and sports accessibility

A shift in media consumption is altering how audiences access live programming, particularly sports. Research from Parks Associates indicates that 39% of US internet households now watch live events or sports through on-demand streaming services. Additionally, 25% of households utilize free ad-supported television (FAST) services for live video, while 21% report watching no live video at all.

This transition has created challenges for local accessibility. The Cleveland Cavaliers were recently ranked last in a local broadcast accessibility report by Awful Announcing. Following the shutdown of FanDuel Sports Network, the Cavaliers signed a multi-year deal with the streaming service DAZN. Because the team lacks over-the-air broadcasts or cable availability, the move has been criticized for making games harder to access, with 59 games designated as streaming exclusives.
