Streaming trends show growing preference for miniseries over long-running series
Streaming audiences are increasingly favoring miniseries over traditional long-running series. This shift is driven by a desire for complete, self-contained stories that avoid the risk of sudden cancellations by platforms like Netflix. Miniseries allow viewers to experience a full narrative arc without the multi-year commitment required by standard series, while still providing enough depth to foster parasocial relationships with characters that feature-length films often lack.
From a production standpoint, the miniseries format is becoming a safer financial strategy. Limited episode counts allow studios to allocate higher budgets toward script quality, cinematography, and production design, which in turn attracts high-profile actors and directors.
However, maintaining momentum for returning series remains a challenge. Netflix’s “The Gentlemen,” created by Guy Ritchie, saw a 45.1% drop in views during its second season debut compared to its first. While the first season garnered 12.2 million views during its initial four-day window, the second season recorded 6.7 million. Analysts suggest the two-and-a-half-year gap between seasons may contribute to this decline in viewership.
