Street Fighter director Kitao Sakurai avoids conventional video game movie tropes

Director Kitao Sakurai aims to move away from conventional video game adaptations with his upcoming ‘Street Fighter’ film. Rather than creating a generic Hollywood production, Sakurai intends to embrace the colorful and over-the-top personality of Capcom’s fighting game franchise.

Sakurai, known for his comedy background with ‘The Eric Andre Show’ and ‘Bad Trip’, co-wrote the screenplay. He expressed a desire to capture the sense of fun and irreverence found in childhood martial arts movies. The film’s trailer suggests a blend of comedy, martial arts chaos, and a bright, pop-inspired visual style.

The cast includes Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Cody Rhodes as Guile, Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson as Balrog, and David Dastmalchian as M. Bison.
