Street Fighter film to feature 2D animated flashback sequences

The upcoming live-action Street Fighter film, a joint production by Capcom and Legendary Pictures, will incorporate traditional 2D animated sequences for its flashback scenes. Director and co-writer Kitao Sakurai stated that these hand-drawn segments are intended to narrate the backstories of protagonists Ryu and Ken, specifically focusing on their training under master Gouken.

Set in 1993, the film aims to capture a 1990s aesthetic. Sakurai noted that using 2D animation avoids the need for digital de-aging or child actors, which he felt would not suit the film's tone. The animation style is inspired by classic anime such as Akira and Ghost in the Shell, with Titmouse studio providing the hand-drawn work.

The live-action cast includes Noah Centineo and Andrew Koji as the leads, while Don Lee will portray Gouken and Roman Reigns will play Akuma.
