Health and aging: Strategies for maintaining muscle and autonomy
Experts and recent studies highlight various methods to maintain health, muscle mass, and autonomy during the aging process. Nutritional strategies, such as distributing protein intake throughout the day and increasing fiber consumption, are recommended to combat sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength.
Physical activity remains a cornerstone of healthy aging. Research suggests that even short, frequent bursts of movement, known as “exercise snacking,” can be as effective for strength gains as traditional, longer workouts. For individuals over 70, specific interventions like low-intensity stationary cycling combined with blood flow restriction (BFR) have shown potential for improving muscle strength and mobility without requiring heavy loads.
Beyond nutrition and exercise, experts emphasize the importance of cognitive stimulation and lifestyle adjustments, such as regular medical check-ups and social engagement, to preserve quality of life in later years.
