Strength and power training for older adults
Maintaining mobility and preventing falls in older age requires a combination of muscle strength and muscle power. While traditional strength training focuses on the maximum force a muscle can produce, muscle power—the ability to produce force quickly—tends to decline two to three times faster than raw strength after age 50.
Effective fitness routines for men in their 50s and older should incorporate both resistance exercises and balance drills. To address the decline in power, specific movements such as quick hip lifts, sideways catches, and power step-ups can be used to pair controlled phases with fast, explosive movements. These programs can be performed at home or in a gym using equipment like dumbbells, resistance bands, or a stable chair to improve stability and preserve mobility.
