Strength training and protein guidance for adults over 50

Personal trainer José Ruiz stresses that strength training should become a priority at each decade of adult life. At 40, it builds a future foundation; at 50, it shifts from aesthetics to a health necessity; and at 60, it guarantees independence for daily tasks. Ruiz recommends 2–3 weekly sessions, balanced whole‑body routines, proper technique, and adequate rest, using either machines or free weights as appropriate.

Nutrition experts from the Stanford Center on Longevity and Harvard Health advise adults over 50 to boost protein intake to 1.2–1.6 g per kilogram of body weight per day, spread across meals (about 30 g each). Easy sources such as yogurt, eggs and canned fish (sardines, tuna, mackerel) provide high‑quality protein and additional nutrients that support muscle maintenance, tissue repair, and overall health.
