Strength training benefits and risks of fasted exercise

Scientific research suggests that strength training twice a week can serve as an optimal threshold for achieving significant health, longevity, and muscle growth benefits. Engaging in full-body workouts at this frequency allows for a 48-to-72-hour recovery window, which is essential for muscle protein synthesis and preventing injury or overtraining. This approach can yield approximately 80-85% of the results seen with more frequent training while also boosting metabolism through excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC).

However, medical experts warn against performing intense exercise on an empty stomach, particularly after long periods of fasting. Dr. Mirjana Pavlović Mavić, a specialist in internal oncology and clinical nutrition, notes that training without adequate fuel can lead to muscle loss rather than fat loss. When glucose levels are insufficient, the body may prioritize vital processes over muscle maintenance and may trigger a stress response by increasing cortisol production.
