Strength training exercises for senior stability and fall prevention

Strength training is recommended as a vital tool for older adults to maintain stability, preserve muscle mass, and prevent falls. For women over 70, exercises focusing on leg strength can improve daily agility and reduce the risk of trips by strengthening the quadriceps, glutes, and calves.

Effective home-based routines can include bodyweight movements such as sitting and standing from a chair, assisted squats using a heavy chair for support, heel raises against a wall, and step-ups. These exercises help maintain the ability to perform daily tasks like climbing stairs or getting out of bed without assistance.

For those in their 60s, incorporating dumbbells can enhance these benefits. A recommended approach involves three 20-to-30-minute sessions per week using progressive overload—gradually increasing weight to continue challenging the muscles. This method aligns with World Health Organization physical activity guidelines, which suggest combining daily movement with at least two weekly strength-training sessions.
