Strength training for arms recommended to combat age-related muscle loss

Experts emphasize the importance of strength training, particularly for the arms, to mitigate the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function associated with aging. Research indicates that individuals may lose approximately 3% of muscle mass annually starting from age 60, a rate of decline comparable to the loss experienced per decade starting from age 30.

Trainer Álvaro Puche notes that maintaining arm strength is vital for preserving independence in daily activities, such as carrying groceries or opening jars. Strengthening the biceps, triceps, and forearms contributes to grip strength, which is considered a key marker of longevity.

Effective exercises for toning the triceps and improving arm appearance include push-ups, dumbbell shoulder presses, overhead triceps extensions, triceps kickbacks, dumbbell rows, bench dips, and dumbbell chest presses. For optimal results, experts suggest performing 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions, two to three times per week, while allowing at least 48 hours of recovery between sessions. Progressing gradually in weight or repetitions is essential to prevent injury.
