German Study Shows Strength Training Repairs Muscle Damage
Researchers from the University of Hildesheim, the University of Bonn and the University of Freiburg investigated how high‑intensity strength training repairs muscle tissue. Using a protocol of high‑intensity training sessions, they collected muscle biopsies before training, after six weeks of training and after a 21‑day break. Fractionated proteomics revealed a network of proteins that bind to the contractile apparatus and activate autophagy, the cellular waste‑removal system, to clear damaged structures and promote new protein synthesis.
The data showed that after six weeks of regular training the same mechanical load caused markedly fewer microscopic damages in the muscle fibers. However, the protective effect largely disappeared after a three‑week training pause. The study, which involved eight healthy adult volunteers (data from six participants were analysed), was published in the journal Nature Communications.
