Strength Training Linked to Longer Life and Lower Disease Risk
A series of recent studies show that modest weekly strength‑training can significantly improve longevity and reduce serious disease. One large analysis of nearly 150,000 U.S. health‑professionals found that people who performed about 90–120 minutes of weight‑training per week had a 13% lower risk of death from any cause, a 19% lower risk of cardiovascular death and a 27% lower risk of neurological death. The researchers noted, “People who did around 90 to 120 minutes of strength training a week – or roughly an hour and a half to two hours – had about a 13% lower risk of dying from any cause than those who did none.”
Combining this amount of strength work with the recommended 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity further cut overall mortality risk by roughly 45%, with aerobic exercise alone linked to a 26%–43% reduction. Another secondary analysis of the U.S. POINTER trial, involving 2,111 adults aged 60‑79, showed that a structured three‑hour‑per‑week regimen (aerobic, resistance and flexibility sessions) reduced frailty indices and improved cognitive function over two years.
Health authorities echo these findings: the WHO advises muscle‑strengthening activities on at least two days per week, and the CDC stresses that any physical activity is better than none. The emerging consensus is that regular, moderate strength training—without the need for extensive gym time—offers a cost‑effective way to extend both lifespan and healthspan.
