Strength‑training tips for adults over 50 to slow muscle aging

Experts note that loss of muscle mass begins in the thirties and accelerates with inactivity, impacting strength, balance and metabolic health. Regular resistance work is the most effective anti‑aging strategy.

For women in their fifties, a kettlebell “wood‑chop” movement is recommended to engage the obliques, deep core and stabilising muscles while improving coordination. The exercise is performed from a half‑kneeling stance, moving the weight diagonally upward across the body.

Fundamental functional moves such as squats and lung‑elevations are also highlighted. Squats train the thighs, glutes and trunk simultaneously, supporting everyday actions like standing and climbing stairs. Lunges add balance and unilateral strength. Together these activities aim to preserve independence, posture and overall health for older adults.
