Stress and Anxiety Distinctions Explained

The American Psychological Association describes stress as a normal emotional response to demanding or overwhelming situations, whether minor or major. After traumatic events, some individuals may experience an acute stress reaction lasting up to a month, with symptoms resembling post‑traumatic stress disorder before recovery.

Anxiety, by contrast, is a diagnosed mental‑health disorder characterized by persistent, intrusive worries, avoidance of triggering situations, and physical signs such as sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, or rapid heartbeat. In the United States, more than 40 million adults are affected, and a 2012 study published in *Psychological Medicine* estimated that roughly one in 13 people worldwide experience an anxiety disorder.
