Stress impacts cardiovascular health and can cause broken heart syndrome
Stress can significantly impact the cardiovascular system by activating the sympathetic nervous system. According to cardiologist Ioannis Paliolos, a Director at Metropolitan Hospital and University of Athens doctor, the increased secretion of adrenaline during stressful periods can lead to tachycardia, palpitations, arrhythmias, and increased blood pressure.
In severe cases following intense emotional strain, individuals may develop ‘broken heart syndrome’, also known as stress cardiomyopathy. This condition presents clinical symptoms similar to a heart attack, including intense chest pain, and requires urgent medical attention. While diagnostic tests such as electrocardiograms and ultrasounds often show pathological results and elevated markers of myocardial necrosis, coronary angiography typically reveals no arterial blockages.
