Stress management and emotional regulation techniques
Various psychological and physiological techniques can be utilized to manage stress and maintain emotional stability in daily life.
Practical methods for emotional regulation include implementing a three-second pause before reacting to triggers, using physical isolation by changing environments to de-escalate tension, and adopting an objective third-party perspective to view challenges as external events. Writing down negative emotions to externalize them can also serve as a mental detox.
Physiological approaches include the 4-4-6 breathing technique—inhaling for four seconds, holding for four, and exhaling for six—to activate the vagus nerve and lower cortisol levels. Other effective methods include using water through showers or splashing cold water on the face to trigger the diving reflex, spending time in nature to reduce sympathetic nervous system activity, and practicing self-soothing through gentle physical touch to increase oxytocin. Additionally, questioning negative internal monologues and practicing self-affirmation can improve emotional resilience and confidence.
