Stress management and its impact on physical and oral health
Stress can have significant impacts on both physical and psychological health. In the United States, studies indicate that 77% of people regularly experience physical symptoms of stress, while 73% experience psychological symptoms.
Stress specifically affects oral health through several mechanisms. One common response is bruxism, or teeth grinding and clenching, which can occur during sleep or wakefulness and may lead to jaw pain, headaches, and tooth damage. Additionally, long-term stress can weaken the immune system, increasing susceptibility to gum disease and inflammation. Stress can also trigger emotional eating, often leading to increased consumption of sugary or acidic foods that promote harmful bacteria in the mouth.
While achieving a completely stress-free life may be difficult due to unpredictable life circumstances, taking actionable steps to manage pressure can mitigate long-term health risks such as muscle tension and sleep problems.
