Workplace stress and presenteeism impact employee health

Workplace stress and the phenomenon of presenteeism—working while ill—are significant threats to physical and mental health. Chronic stress often manifests gradually through symptoms such as sleep disturbances, headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, and irritability. Even highly productive employees may experience emotional exhaustion and a loss of interest in personal hobbies without immediate drops in performance.

Research indicates that between one-third and one-half of workers in the United Kingdom engage in presenteeism. While older generations may have been more inclined to endure illness, younger workers increasingly view mental well-being as an integral part of overall health, though they often face more precarious employment contracts. Psychological factors, such as 'work centrality'—where identity is closely tied to a job—can lead individuals to feel guilt when taking sick leave.

To combat immediate stress, experts suggest breathing techniques like Box Breathing, the 4-7-8 method, and the physiological sigh, which can help lower cortisol levels and activate the parasympathetic nervous system.
