Stripe to acquire OpenRouter in deal valued over $7 billion

Stripe has agreed to acquire OpenRouter in a deal valued at over $7 billion, according to reports. OpenRouter provides an interface that allows enterprise buyers to access, compare, and switch between more than 400 AI models, routing demand based on cost, performance, latency, and availability.

This acquisition positions Stripe as a strategic intermediary in the AI economy. By controlling the layer where AI services are discovered and consumed, Stripe sits on both sides of the transaction: providing payment infrastructure to model providers and offering management and billing tools to buyers. This move follows Stripe’s January 2026 acquisition of Metronome, a company specializing in usage-based metering and billing.

Industry analysts suggest this reflects a broader shift in the AI sector. As individual models become increasingly commoditized, value is migrating toward infrastructure and platforms that offer flexibility. Rather than betting on a single winning model, businesses are increasingly adopting hybrid strategies and model routing to match specific workloads with the most efficient models available.
