Adıyaman announces heavy fines to protect endangered striped hyenas
Authorities in Adıyaman, Turkey, have announced strict penalties to protect the endangered striped hyena, a species listed on the IUCN Red List. Under the Law on Wild Hunting (No. 4915), individuals found hunting striped hyenas will face compensation fines of up to 5 million TL.
In addition to hunting penalties, the Adıyaman Nature Conservation and National Parks Directorate (DKMP) is targeting illegal feeding practices. People leaving meat or other food items in the wild to attract or view the animals can be fined up to 75,000 TL.
DKMP Director Dengir Turanlı warned that such illegal baiting disrupts the animals' natural behaviors and poses risks to both wildlife and citizens. The striped hyena is a vital part of the ecological balance and prefers to live away from human interference.
