Striscia la Notizia ends after 38 years on Italian TV
The satirical news program Striscia la Notizia, created by Antonio Ricci on 7 November 1988, has been removed from Mediaset’s 2026‑2027 schedule, effectively ending its 38‑year run on Canale 5. The decision was confirmed by Pier Silvio Berlusconi during the presentation of the new line‑up, and no alternative broadcaster has announced a revival.
From 25 July 2026 the programme’s social‑media accounts were transferred from Ricci’s production team to Mediaset and subsequently ceased posting. Declining viewership over recent years, driven by competition from the game show Affari Tuoi on Rai 1 and the successful insertion of La Ruota della Fortuna in the access‑prime‑time slot in summer 2025, eroded its audience. An attempt to revive the format with a nine‑episode prime‑time special series in early 2026 averaged 1.9 million viewers but was quickly discontinued, and longtime staff were placed on leave.
