Strömsund Bridge closed after heavy transport causes structural damage
The Strömsund Bridge on the E45 in Jämtland remains closed following damage caused by a heavy transport on September 29. A truck weighing approximately 100 tons, which had received a permit to cross despite the bridge's 74-ton limit, caused a pendulum bearing to fail. This resulted in the northern side of the roadway lifting by approximately 40 centimeters.
Trafikverket reports that the failed bearing was not included in recent renovations. To facilitate inspections of the remaining bearings, the heavy transport must first be moved from its position on the bridge.
The closure has significant regional implications. Emergency services in Strömsund have adjusted their response protocols, including utilizing standby personnel on both sides of the bridge and rerouting calls to Hammerdal. To maintain transit, Trafikverket is implementing ferry services for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians, alongside designated detour routes. A preliminary estimate suggests the bridge may reopen in approximately one month.
