Stroke awareness highlights importance of rapid response and rehabilitation

World Stroke Day emphasizes the critical need for early recognition of symptoms and the vital role of rehabilitation in recovering autonomy. Stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability globally.

In Portugal, stroke is the single leading cause of death, accounting for 9,007 deaths in 2024, which represents 7.6% of the country's total mortality. Data indicates that strokes disproportionately affect women, with 78.7 female deaths for every 100 male deaths. Key warning signs include facial asymmetry, sudden arm weakness, and difficulty speaking. Rapid medical intervention via emergency services is essential to improving outcomes.

In Brazil, the Dr. Henrique Santillo State Rehabilitation and Readaptation Center (Crer) in Goiás serves as a reference for post-stroke care. The facility currently supports 80 patients, 80% of whom suffered ischemic strokes. The multidisciplinary treatment approach includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, and social services, as well as the provision of orthopedic aids like wheelchairs and walkers to help patients regain independence in daily activities.
