Stroke prevention and symptom awareness campaigns

Health officials and medical institutions are intensifying efforts to raise awareness about the signs of stroke (Accident Vasculaire Cérébral) to ensure rapid medical intervention.

In Togo, Professor Mofou Belo of the Ministry of Health reported that 365 deaths were caused by strokes in health facilities during 2023. He emphasizes that medical care must occur within four hours to prevent permanent damage. Key symptoms include facial drooping, arm or leg weakness, difficulty speaking, sudden vision loss, and intense headaches.

In Mayotte, the Centre Hospitalier de Mayotte (CHM) has launched a month-long prevention campaign to combat the rising incidence of strokes among younger populations. The initiative involves field teams traveling across the island to discuss specific risk factors, such as hypertension in Bandraboua, diabetes in Chiconi, obesity in Chirongui, and cholesterol in Petite-Terre. The campaign utilizes media spots, social media, and public signage to encourage healthy eating and physical activity.
