Stroke research highlights rising risks and triggers
Recent medical studies have identified new patterns and triggers regarding stroke occurrence and its long-term effects. An international study involving 13,462 participants across 32 countries found that intense anger or emotional upset in the hour preceding a stroke was associated with approximately 30% higher odds of the event. Additionally, heavy physical exertion was reported by roughly one in twenty participants, showing a particular association with bleeding strokes.
Research also indicates a significant shift in demographics, with stroke rates among adults aged 20 to 54 nearly doubling over the last three decades. In a study tracking cases from 1993 to 2020, the rate for this age group rose from 33.9 to 62.2 cases per 100,000 person-years. This increase was primarily driven by ischemic strokes, which occur when blood vessels are blocked.
Furthermore, researchers at the University of Florida have explored the link between stroke and cognitive decline. Findings suggest that stroke can increase the risk of dementia by as much as 80%. The study highlights how “biological time,” measured through DNA methylation, plays a role in how biological aging mediates the impact of a stroke on a person's cognition.
