Shelina Rahman and daughter Sameeha die in Mersea Island beach tragedy

Shelina Rahman, 41, and her 15‑year‑old daughter Sameeha were confirmed dead after a drowning incident on July 22 at Mersea Island, Essex. The mother‑daughter pair were part of a family of six – three adults and three children – who entered the water together while enjoying a day at the beach. A seven‑year‑old cousin, Musa Ahmed, was air‑lifted to hospital and remains in critical condition; several other relatives were also treated for injuries and are recovering.

Essex Police, led by Detective Chief Inspector Al Pitcher, are investigating the circumstances and have thanked members of the public who assisted at the scene. Chief Inspector Michelle Sparks praised the community’s “courage and selflessness.” The family’s father, Shahin Ahmed, has called for a safety review of West Mersea Beach, urging additional life‑saving equipment and clearer warning signage. The investigation continues with interviews of witnesses and coordination with fire, council and coastguard services.
