Struga Municipality faces 12 million euro debt crisis

The Municipality of Struga is facing a total debt of 12 million euros, which has significantly hindered its ability to function. According to Mayor Mendi Qyra, the municipality is currently limited to a framework of 850,000 euros for salaries and certain projects, as any funds exceeding this amount are seized by bailiffs to settle debts accumulated since 2007.

To address this, the municipality recently paid 1.551 million euros in debt. Qyra stated that the goal is to completely remove the financial blockages by the end of the year to allow the municipal budget to operate more effectively. Part of the recent payments, totaling 15,000 euros, was allocated to student transport services following a recent work stoppage by local transporters. The Mayor has pledged to settle all outstanding debts to transporters by year-end to ensure normal public transport operations.
