Struga Municipality scales back primary school closure plan
The Struga Municipality has revised its initial plan for school closures due to the current social and political climate. While the original proposal included closing 8 peripheral and 4 central primary schools, the updated plan will only see the closure of 4 peripheral schools in the villages of Poum, Xhepin, Bogoicë, and Nerez starting this September.
Despite the reduction in school numbers, the municipality will reduce the total number of classes by 30 across 11 primary schools. Officials stated that this reorganization is necessary to address a financial collapse caused by maintaining high numbers of classes despite a shrinking student population. The Ministry of Education has given a positive opinion on the new plan, which now awaits final approval from the Municipal Council.
Local officials and retired educators noted a significant demographic shift, with one teacher reporting that the total number of students in Struga has dropped by roughly 60% in recent years. Authorities emphasized that no teachers with current employment decisions will lose their jobs as a result of these changes.
