Struma River Drowning in Bulgaria Claims Four Lives

On a Friday afternoon, three children aged 6, 8 and 11 were walking near the Struma River in Bulgaria with their grandparents. Two of the boys entered the water, were swept away by a strong current, and their grandparents attempted to rescue them but were also carried off.

Rescue teams, police, firefighters, volunteers from Kyustendil and Boboshevo, and a specialized Sofia municipal unit conducted a search lasting more than 24 hours. Using boats, sonar equipment, drones and divers, they found the bodies of the grandparents and the first child on Friday evening, and recovered the second child's body the following afternoon. The causes of the tragedy are still under investigation.
