Strumica River identified as one of North Macedonia's most polluted

The Strumica River has been identified as one of the most polluted rivers in North Macedonia, according to analyses by the Directorate for Hydrometeorological Works (UHMR). Comparative studies indicate that the Strumica River, specifically near Novo Konjarevo, and the Black River at the Skoçimir measuring point are among the most contaminated water bodies in the country.

Key pollutants identified include nutrients, phosphates, and occasionally nitrites. The contamination is attributed to several sources, including fecal matter from settlements lacking adequate sewage networks or proper wastewater treatment. Additionally, agricultural runoff containing chemical agents and nutrients adds further pressure to the river's ecosystem.

Local residents have noted a significant decline in biodiversity, observing that many fish species present during their childhood have disappeared. Environmental organizations warn that climate change may exacerbate the issue, as lower water levels reduce the river's capacity to dilute pollutants.
