Strumyani floods: PM Radev inspects damage and announces aid

Prime Minister Rumen Radev visited the Strumyani municipality following severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall and rising river levels. The disaster, which triggered a state of emergency, resulted in significant damage to infrastructure, homes, roads, and bridges. While no fatalities were reported, several residents were evacuated.

Radev noted that while heavy rains cannot be prevented, inspections by the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Ministry of Agriculture have revealed long-standing systemic weaknesses. Key issues include the maintenance of riverbeds and the impact of previous forest fires on water retention. The government plans to focus resources on critical, high-risk sections of riverbeds to prevent future incidents.

To support affected citizens, the government announced a one-time social assistance payment of approximately 1,171 euros, with some residents potentially eligible for up to 4,000 euros. The Ministry of Labor and Social Policy is working with local commissions to process these claims by early September.

Relief efforts are ongoing, with the Bulgarian Red Cross providing bottled water, disinfectants, and psychological support. Local authorities have also launched a donation campaign to aid in the long-term recovery process.
