Strzelecki Lookout safety measures sought by grieving family
The family of Aden Nankervis is campaigning for enhanced safety measures at Strzelecki Lookout following his death by suicide one year ago. Supported by friend Natalie Smith, the family launched a petition that garnered over 2,700 signatures, requesting a site safety review, the installation of permanent vehicle bollards, CCTV cameras, emergency phones, and improved crisis support signage.
In response to the advocacy, City of Newcastle councillors approved a safety review last December. While Lifeline crisis support signage has been placed at three entry points, the Nankervis family has expressed that the signs need to be larger and more visible to be effective. The City of Newcastle has confirmed that traffic-rated bollards will be installed at the lookout, with completion expected by January next year.
